FN

In April 2015 Le Pen’s father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, gave two interviews including controversial statements regarding World War II as well as about minorities in France which led to a political crisis in the FN. Marine Le Pen organized a postal vote asking FN members to amend the party’s statutes , including the removal of her father. J-M Le Pen continued to campaign, and the justice canceled the vote. The FN executive board of directors voted to expel Le Pen from the party that he founded 40 years ago on the 25th of August. Many observers noted Marine’s dependence upon her close adviser, Florian Philippot, a former left-wing technocrat. To eliminate members who opposed modifications in the FN under Marine Le Pen’s leadership the party has organized a purge.

Le Pen subsequently announced her candidacy for the presidency of the regional council of Nord-Pas-de-Calais-Picardie in the 2015 regional elections, though she expressed her regret over the proximity of these elections to the next presidential election. Le Pen finished first on December 6 with 40.6 percent, while her opponent, the Socialist candidate, who had 18.12 percent, withdrew. Le Pen also announced her support for her right-wing opponent Xavier Bertrand who took the victory with 57.80 percent. Marion, her niece, also lost in similar circumstances however, by a smaller margin.
