The FN’s communication also garnered media attention: a new Mitterrand-inspired poster featuring her in a rural landscape and a phrase « Appeased France » was a response to polls that indicated she was still controversial to many of the French electorate. The slogan was later changed to « In the name and the people » after it was perceived as a joke. Meanwhile, the FN logo and the Le Pen name Le Pen were removed from campaign posters.
Le Pen announced her candidacy in Lyon on February 4, 2017 declaring a referendum on France’s membership in the European Union, should she fail to reach her territorial, economic, and legislative goals within the six-month period of negotiation.  Le Pen’s debut television appearance came four days later.

The European Parliament voted on 2 March 2017 to lift Le Pen’s immunity from prosecution for posting violent imagery. Le Pen had tweeted an image of beheaded journalist James Foley in December 2015, and the tweet was deleted following an inquiry from the Foley family. Le Pen was also charged with wasting EU Parliament funds for her party. The immunity she received from prosecution did not extend to ongoing investigation by the FN.

Le Pen had a meeting with several current heads of state, including the head of state from Lebanon, Michel Aoun Chad’s Idriss Deby, and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In 2017 Le Pen argued that France as a country had no responsibility for the Vel’ d’Hiv Roundup that took place in the year 2017 when Paris police officers detained Jewish citizens and deported them to Auschwitz as part of the Holocaust. She reiterated her Gaullist thesis according to which France wasn’t represented through the Vichy regime, but rather by Charles de Gaulle’s Free France.
